Dyslexia screener tool: a simple way to help employees navigate their difficulties

The Q-Pulse WorkRite dyslexia screening is a short online test which generates a report upon completion to help you understand if dyslexia is causing difficulties for any of your employees.

If the report indicates that someone is showing dyslexic tendencies, you can refer them for a full diagnostic assessment. Dyslexia affects 1 in 10 individuals in the UK and getting an accurate diagnosis is key to helping them thrive in the workplace.

What is dyslexia?

Dyslexia affects the way that the brain processes, stores and retrieves information. People with dyslexia might experience problems with their memory, the speed of processing information, time perception and sequencing. None of these should be barriers to achievement, in fact the Equality Act of 2010 protects these individuals, stating that dyslexic people should not be treated unfavourably.

The condition is commonly thought of as something that affects your ability to read and write, but it can affect individuals in numerous ways. No two people will experience it exactly the same. It’s also fairly common for the signs of dyslexia to have been missed during one’s school years as the condition is now better understood and recognised than it used to be.

Some common signs of dyslexia in adulthood include:

  • Reading or writing slower than peers
  • Confusing words which look visually similar
  • Spelling errors
  • Finding it difficult to skim or scan text
  • Having difficulty focusing

A diagnosis can be a relief for somebody struggling with dyslexia, as it gives them the framework to understand why they have trouble with certain things and also a way of communicating these difficulties to employers and co-workers. This also allows employers to put things in place which help these employees navigate their workload.
